Women in Business, Community, and Finding Your Way
There is a moment many women in business recognise.
You start with excitement. An idea. A sense of possibility.
And then, slowly, something begins to feel harder than expected.
Not because you are not capable.
Not because the idea is not good.
But because the way you are trying to do business does not quite fit who you are.
And that disconnect can feel exhausting.
When business feels like walking through treacle
For many women, building a business can feel like pushing forward against resistance you cannot always explain.
You are doing the work.
You are showing up.
You are trying to follow the advice.
And yet, progress feels slow. Heavy. Sticky.
Like walking through treacle.
Part of that comes from the expectations placed on business itself. Much of what we see, learn, and are taught is built around models that prioritise competition, speed, and scale.
But not everyone thrives in that environment.
The pressure to fit a system that was not built for you
There is often an unspoken assumption that there is a “right” way to do business.
Follow the strategy.
Use the framework.
Hit the numbers.
And if it is not working, the instinct is to adjust yourself to fit the system.
But what if the system is not designed with you in mind?
Many women naturally lean towards collaboration, connection, and community. These are often labelled as “soft skills”, as if they carry less weight or value.
In reality, they are the foundations of trust, relationships, and long-term sustainability in business.
Yet when those strengths are dismissed or undervalued, it can create a sense that you need to become someone else in order to succeed.
The hidden cost of constantly adapting yourself
When you are always bending to meet external expectations, it takes a toll.
It drains your energy.
It impacts your confidence.
It makes decisions harder.
And over time, it can distance you from what you actually want your business to feel like.
Success, in that context, becomes something you are chasing, rather than something you are building in a way that feels aligned.
The importance of community (and why it matters more than you think)
One of the most powerful shifts comes from realising you do not have to do this alone.
A supportive community does more than provide advice. It creates space.
Space to ask questions.
Space to share ideas.
Space to be seen and understood without judgement.
For many women in business, this sense of community is not just helpful, it is essential.
It allows you to step out of the pressure of doing everything perfectly and into a space where growth feels possible again.
Learning from different perspectives
Community does not mean surrounding yourself only with people who think the same way as you.
In fact, some of the most valuable insights come from different perspectives.
Sometimes, you need someone who can challenge your thinking.
Someone who can see what you cannot.
Someone who can gently call you out when you are holding yourself back.
You cannot read the label when you are inside the jar.
Having people around you who can offer that outside perspective helps you move forward with more clarity and confidence.
Redefining success on your own terms
There is also a deeper question underneath all of this.
What does success actually look like for you?
Not the version you have been told to aim for.
Not the numbers you feel you “should” be chasing.
But the version that fits your life, your responsibilities, your energy, and your priorities.
For many women, business does not exist in isolation. It sits alongside family, relationships, emotional labour, and responsibilities that are often invisible but very real.
That has to be part of the equation.
You are allowed to build this your way
There is no single path to building a successful business.
There are countless strategies, systems, and approaches, and none of them are universally right.
The work is not about finding the “best” way.
It is about finding the way that works for you.
The one that aligns with your values.
The one that respects your capacity.
The one that allows you to grow without losing yourself in the process.
And sometimes, that means unlearning what you thought business was supposed to look like.
You do not have to figure it all out alone
If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next step, you are not the only one.
There are people out there who understand what you are navigating.
There are communities that will support you.
There are conversations that will help you see things differently.
Sometimes, the first step is simply asking for help.

Finding your recipe
There is no universal formula for success in business.
Because your business is not meant to look like everyone else’s.
It is meant to work for you.
And that is the recipe worth creating.
